Halloween in France & Witch Chic Outfit

Halloween in France & Witch Chic OutfitHalloween is my favorite holiday, after Christmas that is! Growing up in France in the ‘70s and ‘80s, we unfortunately didn’t celebrate Halloween.

Halloween is still a foreign holiday in France even though it’s started being celebrated in larger cities like Paris and Lyons in the early ‘90s. Stores mostly take advantage of the holiday for promoting a sale. Most kids do not go trick or treat and you can’t even say that in French! Most people won’t have candies (no Candy Corn!) and the saddest part is they don’t decorate their houses either.

With the All Saints holiday (La Toussaint) on November 1st and school on break that week, the French tradition is to visit cemeteries and pay respect to their loved ones by bringing a Chrysanthenum plant.

Don’t get me wrong, the French love to dress up (even the grown ups) and typically wear costumes on New Year’s Eve, at a birthday party or even for Mardi Gras. Since Halloween is an American holiday, I suspect the French didn’t want to adopt it fully but I won’t go into politics here!

I was 16 years old when I moved to this county and got to celebrate Halloween for the very first time. It’s never too late, right? My first costume was a witch. I’ve always had a fascination with witches and dressed up as one ever since! Who knows, maybe I’m one on the inside!

I enjoy it even more now that I’m a mom. Ella was my witch twinsie until last year. This year, she decided to go solo. She will dress up as a devil, even though she’s already a little devil!

How about you? Are you dressing up for Halloween?

As always, thanks for reading!

A bientôt my pretties!
