In celebration of Bastille Day this Friday, July 14th, I’m sharing one of my favorite summer staple, culottes, which have a long, tumultuous history.
During the French Revolution, culottes were frequently worn by men of upper class and became a symbol of wealth and oppression. So much so, revolutionaries were called “sans culottes” or “without culottes”, referring to their opposition of aristocratic ideas.
The drama surrounding culottes only intensified as they made the transition from a symbol of wealth into a freeing, feminist staple for women. It was the designer Elsa Schiaparetti who helped culottes become socially acceptable, as attitudes towards gender evolved over the next decades.
I love these high waist striped culottes from Zara and how you can tie the belt at the waist with a bow. How chic is that? Wide leg pants are a great versatile summer piece that you can dress up for the office or simply wear with a tee and white sneakers on the weekend. I paired my navy blue striped culottes with this white off the shoulder blouse and long ruffled sleeves from South Moon Under which is now on sale for $21!
SHOP THIS LOOK: Culottes (similar): Zara | Over Shoulder Top: South Moon Under| Scarf (similar): Hermès | Sandals: DSW Shoes | Tote Handbag: Target
To complete this French inspired outfit, I simply tied one of my favorite Hermès neck scarf et voilà!
Learning how to tie a scarf is a French family affair! My parents gave me my first Hermès scarf on my eighteen’s birthday and my mom made sure I knew how to tie a scarf in all possible ways. Download the Hermès Silk Knots app that has fun videos on how to knot and tie a scarf in a stylish way and become a pro!
Hope you enjoyed this summer French Chic outfit.
As always, thanks for reading!
A bientôt ♥
